ARE WE PREPARED FOR ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE (AI) IN EDUCATION SECTOR?

INTRODUCTION

When American computer scientist John Carthy and four  other  scientists endorsed the term "Artificial Intelligence people did not take it very seriously. Later AI as a branch of emerging discipline began to utilise machines to substitute human intelligence by performing tasks like learning reasoning and making decisions. Infact technologies like pattern recognition, machine learning  neural networks, big data, self Al etc emerged as very successful and all set to shape the future of humanity in terms of security, polity, economy, society and governance. Important AI applications comprise of  Web search engines like Google, recommendation systems used by YouTube, Amazon, Netflix and virtual assistant like Google Assistant,,Siri, and Alexa;autonomous vehicles  Generative and per now there is no escaping from AI now. A generative AI (The type of AI that creates new content, such as text ,images and music, by learning patterns from existing data. Applications include creating stories, generating realistic images, composing music  etc) Generative and creative tools and super human plays ,strategy games etc.AI can also produce wide range of original content  audio,   video, and software code.Examples of Generative AI include tools like Chat GPT for  text and DALL-E for images.

AI EDUCATION AND GROWTH

AI is used in education to personalize learning, automate administrative  tasks  and prov ide instant fee to work.AI  can transfom various sectors including education if optimaly utilised. It has been observed that application of AI in educational institutions will reduce the work load of teachers . Consequentlly without affecting their work load,AI  can provide inspiration for lesson plans or individual0 activities, it can be used in instructions, reports feedbacks etc.AI  application can revolutionise traditional teaching and learning   The integration of AI in education is bound to revolutionise traditional teaching and learning methods, offering new possibilities for personalized  learning increasing teacher student interactions and making education more efficient and accessible. However some anxieties do crop up as and when AI systems in education often require access to vast amount of personal data, including students ' academic records, learning habits, and biometric information .While AI creates customized study plans and learning paths both to students and for teachers it address tasks like grading and scheduling to  focus more on teaching. AI also offers real time support through chat bots, grammar checking and automated feedback on assignment

India is set to introduce AI education to students from academic year 2026-27.The National Education Policy 2020 has been crafting comprehensive framework for AI learning for the entire classes from primary to Plus two levels. Teacher training and pilot projects are essential ingredients for the successful implementation of the  policy. While Greatest task is the challenge of AI upskilling for more than one crore teachers across the country to be supplemented by pilot projects allowing teachers to harness AI tools to design lesson plans and teaching resources. AI powered platforms can better analyse each student's behaviour, learning speed and comprehension to tailor lessons that meet individual needs. For instance if a student struggle with math's the AI tutor offers extra practice and alternative explorations. AI is designed to augment not replace, the human element in education focusing on enhancing human judgment.creativity and critical skills through appropriate tools.Due to  rapid technological advancement the education system keep pace with rapid technological advancement.Analyst observe that AI has most promising opportunities in India about 300 million active members in the formal sector itself. We are late comers in AI compared to countries like USA, China and Korea. The launch of Chat GPT in 2022 Generative AI is rapidly changing the globe. While machine learning focus on analyzing and making predictions based on existing data important Generative AI tools, like Chat GPT  Google Gemini, and DALL-E are based on powerful large large large language models Generative AI is rapidly changing education sector .

ARE WE PREPARED?

According to NITI Aayog report for Inclusive Societal Development 2025 AI can empower India's 490 million informal sector workers by expanding access to health care, education Skilling and financial inclusion.Report highlights how AI driven tools can boost productivity and resilience for millions, who form the backbone of India's economy. Report stresses that technology can bridge deep social and economic divides ensuring that benefit of AI reach  every one. In 2024-25 Schools in  India has approximately 98 lakh teachers and 24.8 crores students and 14.72 million schools. While private schools  employed 38% teachers and enrolled 32.6% of the students, Government Schools employed 51% of teachers and enrolled 50% of students. Astonishingly over 32 lakh students are imparted education by a single teacher accounting above one lakh persons.Apart from school education Higher education comprise of  15.98 lakh faculty members and 4.33 crore students. It has been observed that AI assisted learning is very productive in education. For instance in language AI  can correct pronunciation, explain Grammer and offer personalized practice. The primary issue in imparting AI education emerge from existing digital and economic divide, a significant shortage of trained educators, robust infrastructure and Official concerns.Lack of skilled and competent Educators, insufficient training infrastructure contimues to be major issues. Since AI specific training often  is not compulsory and Bed degree need not require AI  knowledge, training teachers in AI require extra effort and top most priority. While private schools can introduce AI education more efficiently many of the Government schools suffer from infrastructural deficiencies especially in remote areas where students hail from poorer households  and even one smartphone in the house may be  a luxury. They must be provided with continuous power, net connectivity and at least one computer in each class room .It has been observed that traditionally it was digitalisation first followed by automation, instead  AI calls for process to clearly defined with inputs and output and the  right mechanisms to capture data and the ability to add smartness to decision making. With regard to AI machines about 95% of mistakes are solved by private companies. Hence the issues of transparency ,Gender and Development, Inclusion, technological, participation and reflexibility cannont be met and addressed adequately. In any case Governments along with implementing AI education in educational institutions must design the project in such a way so as to achieve inclusiveness and transparency and to meet objectives of growth  equity, and excellence as well.In short the strategy of "AI for All" and "AI for Inclusive Societal Development" aims for accelerated economic growth and social inclusion by leveraging Al in key sectors and ensuring responsible and ethical deployment. Moreover  fostering a robust AI ecosystem is vital adhering to ethical principles including fairness  accountability ,transparency, privacy and security to prevent misuse and bias.Obviously along with AI induced growth and development we must ensure inclusiveness , fairness, transparency and excellence for which we are yet to complete our preparation
