Dedicated Professor.
She had joined Collegiate service in 1997 in Mahe under Puducherry Government service.Prior to that she was working in a central school in Rajasthan. She had an innate passion for teaching and extra curricular activities.Within few years she bought a plot and constructed a house with loan near the college.Meantime her husband after completing doctorate degree procured assistant professor's job.She became financially at ease. Her entire focus turned on the college and students.Meantime senior faculty members retired and she became the head of department. As an H O D she was highly affectionate and caring towards students and department. She was very much financially supportive of poor students and lower grade staff, When college mess was in a mess she herself voluntarily came forward and took the responsibility of running the canteen. To everybody's surprise within few months canteen became very viable earning reasonable profit. For occasions like independence day and republic day she alongwith her two children used to prepare sweet/payasam and distribute in the entire college. Her social activities included providing medical help to the needy. For that she even maintained one vehicle to transport patients to neighbouring hospitals as well as to Puttaparthi and back.
In November 2015 she was transferred to a Post graduate Centre in Pondicherry.By virtue of seniority here also she became head of department. In addition to teaching research activities were also conducted inthe department.Gradually she started to get involved with the activities of the students and department. As usual her curricular, cocurricular and social activities and indepenence day sweet pudding distribution continued.During that period accreditation committee visit was scheduled and prior to that activities and achievements report of the department had to be submitted. As she was going through the research report she found that some of the research papers claimed by a faculty member was either forged or plaguered As a sincere professor she sought explanation from the concerned faculty and later reported the matter to higher ups. There was only limited response.. People were largely concerned with a quantitative report before the assessment committee rather than the genuines of the report. But she fought tooth and nail. There was even physical threat to her from some quarters, but majority of faculty members supported the HOD
In January 2017 when I was admitted with heart failure in a MMC Chennai hospital she alongwith her children rushed to the hospital and stayed there through out night. After one week when my health improved she and children volunteered themselves and took me to native place. For my speedy recovery she even offered many offerings to temple.By March end of 2017 I returned back to the college. There after they made it a practice to take us to the Pondicherry bustand/ railway station and back in their vehicle almost for all trips.
Even though health was not so good college life continued with periodical leave and in October 2018 I retired from pondicherry government service. She took active participation in my retirement related activities.later I was waiting for the settlement of my retirement benefits and formalities before returning to native place. In November 2018 one early morning a phone call came shockingly that our professor had succumbed to cardiac arrest. In fact I was told by her sons Agney and Vinayakan that she instructed them that in the event of her death you should not cry and her body must be cremated in Pondicherry itself.Since the children got precious and valuable training from their mother they could easily tackle the demand from relatives to conduct funeral in Kerala A person who had been constantly helping financially, socially and healthcare wise the needy people apart from teaching is no more. But her fond memories will survive.Pranamam our beloved professor Dr.C.Sakunthala.
