CESAREAN
Babu a grocery and vegetable merchant along with his wife Vasanthi and children Rahul and Reshma were living 8 kilometers away from Thampanoor.Babu's shop is hardly 30 meters away from his house in the same compound and sometimes family members used to assist him.Rahul has been an average student whereas Reshma was very studious throughout her academics. While Reshma got admission to MBBS on general merit in government medical college, Rahul got admission in a degree college for literature. In the medical college Reshma has shown very much passion for studies not only in theory but in practicals as well .Professors were very much impressed by her sincerity and commitment especially during internship period. Senior faculty advised her to opt for Gynecology for post graduation and with their blessings and by grace of almighty without much delay she got admission for Gynecology and Obstetrics. After post graduation she opted to work in a private medical college hospital .Meantime a marriage proposal came from an Assistant Professor Dr.K.Rajendran MtechPhD working in School of Technology, University of Science and Technology who originally hails from Kazhakutom. Both the families were very much attracted and attached by each other ultimately Reshma got married to Rajendran.
Dr.K.Rajendran has been academically very active. Apart from teaching he was the project director of 3 major research projects with a full-fledged research team and a good number of peer reviewed publications.Rajendran used to travel to different universities and research institutions within the country and abroad as a part of his academic activity. If he is in the state every weekend Rajendran used to spend with his wife DrReshma. Dr.Reshma for a healthier family life got shifted to a nearby new private hospital 4 kilometers away from her house and assumed the charge as Head,Department of Gynecology. Within a very short period her sincerity and commitment as a Gynecologist got wide publicity not only in local area but also to far of places, women started crowding her consultation room. She has been a staunch advocate of natural delivery and as far as possible discouraged cesarean. But there were certain cases where women themselves opted for cesarean either to get the child born on an auspicious time/day or to avoid labour pain .
Reshma and Rajendran couple's life was moving smoothly with everyweekend they were meeting and romancing each other. In August first week of 2002 after a one month visit to Japan Rajendran returned back on Friday night 9 o clock with valuable gifts to Reshma. Obviously both of them were very much excited and they went on chatting joyfully with making love and finally slept around 12.00am .Around 150 am a call came from the hospital to Reshma informing about complications of a pregnant woman.Unfortunately there was no vehicle available in the hospital. However Rajendran volunteered himself to drive her to the hospital in his car.On reaching in the hospital immediately cesarean was done both baby girl and mother were saved. It took more than one and half hours to finish the work. Meantime exhausted and tired Rajendran slept in the driver's seat itself. Mistaking him as doctor's driver one of the relatives of the woman had deposited a rupee 50 note into his pocket as a part of celebrating the birth of the child.
Next day there was a discussion between Reshma and Rajendran regarding how to avoid such emergencies as happened yesterday .Rajendran presented the case in a technical and personal point of view suggesting Dr.Reshma to perform cesarean in advance if there is a possibility of disturbing their weekend life and sleep. Next week onwards Dr.Reshma made it a point to examine thoroughly each would be night delivery case and if found probability of disturbing their weekend life ,trace out the relatives of such pregnant women and warn them about possible complications and advice them the need for doing immediate cesarean in the day time itself.
Even though Dr.Reshma was generally happy about the present arrangement at times some thoughts came to her mind-whether her actions are justifiable?Medical ethics doesn't allow such a practice which is morally hazardous. But she console herself in the fact that when husband and wife are approaching her to advance delivery through cesarean to get auspicious birthday or to avoid labour pain and when hospital management is very happy with the present arrangement there is no room for such thoughts. However within few months Dr.Reshma herself delivered a baby boy and it was a normal delivery.
