WORLD PRESS FREEDOM INDEX AND INDIA
Eventhough freedom of press as such is not mentioned in the Indian constitution but constitution protected the right to freedom of speech and expression The world press Freedom day 2024 focuses on thie theme " informing the public about the problems and solutions facing the environment. As per World press Freedom Index India ranked 133rd 0ut of 180 countries freedom Index in 2016,while Finland kept the first position continuously for two years. Finnish communications regulatory authority has detailed regulations dealing with the internet, cyber security, telephone, post,TV and radio. They also publish every details and update news on their website to let the public know their deeds and actions.In 2023 India ranked 161 out of 180 countries with a score of only 36.62 out of 100..In 2022 India's rank was 150.India ranked 159 in the 2024 world press Index as against Pakistan 152 Afghanistan 172.and China 177."The press Freedom is defined as the ability of journalists as individuals and collectives to select produce and disseminate news in the public interest independent of political economic legal and social interference and in the absence of threats to their physical and mental safety "
It is to be noted that the institutions responsible for protecting press Freedom in India are 1.Press Council of India(PCI)2. Ministry of Information and Broadcasting 3.News Broadcasters Association (NBA) 4.Editors Guild of India 5.Legal system 6.International organizations like Reporters Without Borders etc However at times we experience legal and regulatory constraints like frequent Government interference that may adversely affect press Freedom. In many cases Government may use advertising budgets as a tool to reward or punish media organization which in turn likely to impact their reporting. Journalists are also facing physical threat and violence especially when reporting on sensitive issues like corruption, organized crime etc.In some cases Journalists suffered from organised collective threats even leading to death. In the midst of digital revolution many countries including India confronts the threat from digital authoritarianism. In such scenario country badly needs both political action and judicial determination to protect freedom of press Freedom entails the right to operate without any censorship or government interference which is the core component of freedom of expression. Journalists and media outlets should be able to publish or broadcast news or information without Government imposed censorship. Access to information and sources to investigate and report matters of public interest is of vital importance.
To protect press Freedom in India we require a well coordinated and concerted strategy where all the major stakeholders are sharing their commitments towards upholding the principles of free press in a democratic society, where by legal protection is strengthened setting up of independent regulatory framework particularly to protect journalists and whistle blowers are established. Other measures Include public broadcasting independence, promote transparency and journalistic ethics along with international cooperation. Finally for climate resilient projects there is a strong case for press Freedom both journalists and media outlets to consolidate the expertise of scientists, metereologists,technocrats and other related experts in the planning designing and implementation of sustainable climate resilient projects.
