2025 TIANJIN SCO SUMMIT AND INDIA

The Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) originated as the security mechanism established in 1996  comprising of five countries-China, Russia, Kazakhstan Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan  When Uzbekistan joined the group in June 2001it became  a EuroAsian political economic and security alliance SCO. After signing of  SCO charter in 2002 countries like India, Pakistan and Iran were granted observer status in 2005 and in 2017 countries like India and Pakistan officially joined SCOas  full members. By 2007 the SCO  had initiated more than 20 large scale projects comprising of energy, telecommunications, transportation etc.in addition to regular meetings on defense, security, military, economic ,cultural banking and external affairs. It may be noted here that in November 2006 at the SCO meeting Russian Foreign Ministry took initiatives for setting up a SCO "Energy Club ".Infact the SCO developed rapidly and established a number of permanensset bodies as well as ad hoc initiatives dealing with security cooperation and development

The 2025 SCO summit was  concluded with the adoption of Tianjin declaration by the ten member states reaffirming commitment to regional security, economic cooperation, and multipolar world order. The outcome gave key emphasis of the declaration was the rejection of "double standards " in counter terrorism, separatism  and extremism, while affirming the primary responsibility of soveriegn states in compating these threats within their  borders Eventhough the declaration do not mention about Russian  invasion of Ukraine but it did condemn earlier Israeli and US strikes against Iran. The declaration also supported the facilitation of a multilateral trading system instead of a system based on unilateral bullying.

.The SCO  Tianjin Summit has been the largest  since the organisation that provided membership to 23 countries.Currently SCO account for 42% of the total global population and 17.2% of the global trade. SCO had established four security centres. The summit 2025 brought back China and India into diplomatic spot light after a gap of seven years that in the context of escalating US tariff disputes and wild allegations like Modi war against Ukraine. The outcome of the Summit focused on addressing security threats, combating transnational organised crime, enhancing cyber security, information safety and advocating anti drug cooperation.

INDIA AND  SCO

Since  joining the SCO in 2017 India has been playing a significant role existing geopolical condition especially in the context of US president Trump's uncertian tariff  and foreign policies impacted positively  on the roles of groupings like BRICS and the SCO .During the 2025 SCO summit period itself Trump became relatively soft in his harsh policies.Chinese Priminster Xi s announcement included not only major platforms for SCO cooperation in energy, green industry and digital economy but also scientific and technological institutions and Global Governance Initiatives (GGI).It is significant to note that while most of the individual participating countries were largely struck to bilateral negotiations Chinese President delt with framework for multilateral system that can operate with Global Governance Initiatives (GGI). In the existing scenario China stands ready to  work jointly with India by enlarging cooperation with SCO. India should continue to uphold the basic priorities of peaceful coexistence followed by the  older generation. We should capitalise mutual trust evolve strategies based on mutual trust,co-operation and tolerance. We should allow the boundary question to be resolved on a lasting basis. Moreover India has been advocating diversified, resilientWTO based fair trading system. It may be recalled here that non cooperation of countries like USA by aborting a relatively well administered trade dispute settlement  mechanism followed by WTO has seriously distorted smooth global trade which has to rectified. That will be particularly beneficial to developing countries. In short existing geopolical conditions can accelerate the march towards a better multipolar world where western dominance will definitely decline further and China and India will emerge stronger provided China is not resorting to any dubious activities and boundary issues are settled
