I MF Economic Outlook October 2026 : Resilience Under Strain ,Urgent Choices
GLOBAL SCENARIO
During the last seven years global economy has witnessed severe stress in terms of pandemic induced disruption in global supply chains, the wars in Ukraine and Middle East, consequent sharp increase in energy and commodity prices. Consequently significant changes in trade barriers further impacted resilience of households, firms, financial markets and governments. The resilience can be measured in terms of IMF's global growth forecast .Resilience is unevenly distributed. The technology cycle has provided a demand impulse driven by strong investment in Artificial Intelligence. The interaction of forces like geopolitics and technology produced a split in global economy. Favourable terms of trade or technology related exports and investment give some countries a cushion as against higher import bill and weaker demand for others. Use of buffers and adaptability have helped few to tide over fiscal and external stress

TRANSFORMATIVE FORCES
Two main transformative forces working in the global economy have been observed as 1. Geopolitics and 2.Technology.Both are reshaping global economy through war where both short term and long term impacts are clearly visible.Geopolitics' latest manifestation is the war in Middle East .Immediate impact is in other regions and tensions in international trade. The negative supply shocks from the war is affecting many adversely on prices and inflation. The role of technology in development has been accelerating rapidly. It enhances innovation, infrastructure, automation, efficiency and production .Eventhough latest technology including AI is helping to produce more and reduce costs they have negative impact interms of economic, social and environmental factors including inrease in unemployment.Hence policy makers should approach technology adoption with focus on employment generation, inclusive development and appropriate and efficient management of technology including AI.
