RESILIENCE AMONG DIVERGENCE.

According International Monetary Fund 's World Economic Outlook released in April Global economy remained remarkably resilient with steady growth and inflation returning to target level which luckily defied both stagflation expectations and global recession,especially in the context of post pandemic supply disruptions, Russian invasion of Ukraine and subsequent global  energy and food crises as well as  monetary tightening resorted  across countries. GLOBAL TRADE AND DEVELOPMENT

 The United Nations Conference on Trade and Development(UNCTAD)was established in1964 with the objectives of promoting trade in both primary and manufactured goods, development financing, technology transfer and economic cooperation among developing countries. UNCTAD's2023 report on   Trade and Development  focussed  on themes of  :"Growth ,Debt , Climate-Realigning and Global Financial Architecture", it has projected only a low   growth of 2.4 % in 2023 and outlook for 2024 suggested a modest improvement to 2.5 %  assuming factors like recovery in Euro area and lack of major disturbances in leading economies.Report has identified three specific Global challenges namely weak Global growth, divergence between major and developing countries and increased geopolical factors . EMPLOYMENT SCENARIO IN INDIA

 Generally speaking if a country's national income, output and employment grow together there will be optimum growth and well-being. But given the largest size of population spread of capital intensive techniques of production, automation and Digitalisation,  generation of adequate employment opportunities in a country like India becomes a great challenge.  .Since mid  1980s and more particularly after the liberaiisation of Indian economy, in the 2000s GDP growth rate exceeded 8%.But despite 2008 global financial crisis and Covid 19 pandemic Indian economy on an average achieved remarkably more than 6% GDP growth for the past four decades.Despite relatively high growth the country has been  lagging behind continously in employment generation across the years. RESTORING THE CROWN OF WTO: TASK AHEAD.

 The organizational structure of the world Trade Organisation (WTO) was headed by the Ministerial Conference composed of all member countries who  meet  at least once in two years .There is the General Council of WTO composed of all the members to oversee the operation of WTO agreements and Ministerial decisions on a regular basis. There is also Councils for- Trade in goods, trade in services, and Trade related aspects of intellectual property rights and also commitees on - Trade and Development, Balance of Payments and Budget Finance  and  Administration.
